    My mother of all doesn’t move and I don’t have a way to adjust tension. I have an orifice I’ve threaded the bobin. I can’t have an uptake. Can you tell me if I have a working wheel?

  • @lunacavemoth
    @lunacavemoth Месяц назад

    can't believe people still think this way. i see it all the time on the handspinning subreddit on reddit. many ask about "upgrading" to a wheel or if starting out with a wheel. Abby, I've been spinning with a drop spindle since 2012. Your book, "Respect the Spindle", taught me everything , apart from Ask the Bellwether. I have not considered buying a wheel in years, once I saw that indeed, all the yarn you need can be spun with a spindle. In fact, I have too much handspun at the moment! If you think about it, much of the yarn and thread for cloth throughout history was spun on spindles and that was never an issue.

    How is the weather in Cusco in mid-Feburary? Not MP, but the city of Cusco. Would the rain prevent you from walking around and exploring the city? Does it rain all day? Trying to decide whether to include Cusco for few days when visiting Peru.

    Abby, is this as shoulder-intense as it seems? I'm really interested in adding spinning to my ever-increasing fiber skill list, but not at the expense if my oh so precarious joints... (I mostly knit with cotton and silk these days, so spinning wool roving doesn't really make my heart sing) Thanks Abby!

    • @abbysyarns
      @abbysyarns 10 месяцев назад

      There are a ton of ways for spinning to be very ergonomic. This particular set of techniques is demonstrated here with very big gestures because the small, comfortable ones, are a little hard to show. Cotton is a little tricky to start with in part because finding good fiber can be tricky. I would suggest you start with silk if you’re completely opposed to even using wool as a starting point to learn. Send me an email and I will send you some more info for where to start.

    Thank you for sharing this! It's hilarious! Reminds me of how in movies or TV series actors pretend to knit (it's horrible to watch as a knitter). LLM also imitates knowledge but does not make sense. It's a great experiment anyone can try: pick a topic you know a lot about and ask LLM to clarify something or answer a question about it and read carefully. You will notice that it will sort of sound smart and correct but approximately 10-20% of information will be incorrect, contradictory, and even stupid. If you are a novice, you might not catch these 10-20% right away and believe that the content is good quality, but it's not. I tried it with several subjects I studied in depth and understand very well (both practical things, like crafts, and more abstract things, like social science) - the result is always the same: lots of grammatically correct text that sounds clever and just imitates knowledge.

    This reminds me of the kid elementary school exercise of having kids write directions to make peanut butter sandwiches and then following it exactly. The grammar might be better from the "AI" but the directions are about as effective.

  • @nancyreid8729
    @nancyreid8729 10 месяцев назад

    Thank you! The only thing I would add to this is extrapolation, because we all know some people who can’t connect dots. If LLM can be this wildly inaccurate here, where we are technically proficient enough to be able to spot the glaring boners, the smart scout will bring that same level of skepticism to any technical content generated the same way.

    Who are these people? I enjoy both spindles and spinning wheels and can make the same amount of yarn on both, however the spindle travels much better than a wheel. I still can't walk and spin, but that's a me issue.

  • @stellaluna6421
    @stellaluna6421 11 месяцев назад

    (you can make lots of yarn if you're willing to do it in public and can walk and spin at the same time. I was taken aback when I saw my first wheel demonstration and the person demonstrating talked about how annoyed they found winding yarn on to the spindle, like it was somehow abnormal. I'd never thought about winding the yarn on-it's just part of the process. Of course you pause, it's just part of the rhythm)

    Your book "Respect the Spindle" is the reason I didn't feel the need to buy a spinning wheel for the first 12 years of my spinning journey. I've had very good success on my spindles. I would also LOVE to hear more on the topic of different tools. I very much respect the concept of using the right tool for the right job and am always looking to learn more, especially from you!

    Hi Abby, thank you for this video. Your cat reminded me of the Dutch word for 'purring', that lovely buzzing sound your cat makes at the end of the video. The Dutch word is... wait for it... spinnen! As in 'spinning'. And be honest, isn't a cat's purr similar to the homely sound of a spinning wheel purring whe it's busy? ❤

    This is such a gorgeous place! I wonder if you thought about artists retreats! The scenery is perfect for outdoor painting, I am sure many artists would want to explore it. (That's just pure nature, I am sure there is much more in terms of historic locations and architecture.) In many cases, artists just go to super touristy places and pay lots of money for hotels and transportation. This place sounds very affordable and has so many things to offer to artists. (The best part is they paint most of the day and don't require much entertainment.) If you are looking to expand your guest list, I suggest reaching out to artists who do annual (or more frequent) master classes, where they bring a group of people to a beautiful location and then do a workshop for a week or so (you can find many of them on Instagram). In many cases, these tours include pre-planned painting and learning experiences, but then people are left to their own devices in between the teaching sessions. Your place could offer people things to do after/before they go paint. I am a huge fan of Jorge Corpuna (native Peruvian watercolor artist). He is doing workshops all over the world. Maybe he can help you find artists groups who are looking for beautiful and affordable locations.
